The Centre kARThala will be a place of education, research, information, and of promotion of the contemporary artistic expressions of the Comoros and of the Indian Ocean, dedicated to the young non schooled who have already shown their desire to make a living of artistic creation.

A big thank you to the village of Salimani Hambou who provided the space to house the development of this noble project.

EXCHANGE

The KARThala wishes to release the Comorian artists and those of the area of insulation and is committed to support the meetings between Comorian artists and those of the islands of the Indian Ocean, between artists of the area and those of the African continent and the rest of the world.

KARThala also wishes to make the local artists and art lovers discover what is done regarding Visual Arts elsewhere by organizing exhibitions in regional and international sense, by inviting artists in residence, trainers, art critics and art historians, etc...

EDUCATION

It is not a question to create a school of the European type but to offer to the young people a formation adapted to their expectations and with the evolution of the international art scene.

The KARThala Center wants to start, to identify and support the young Comorians of the area who have expressed real interest to profit from an artistic formation or an additional training in manual work in connection with aesthetics.

Whereas the Comoros have a rich visual artistic vocabulary which is still not exploited by the Comorian artists, artistic teaching is still not introduced into the public schools of general education.

The craft industry and the architectural style of our traditional public places (bangwé), the shawls (lessos) with Comorian symbols or our embroidery, have in themselves all the ingredients which would allow the Comorian artists, craftsmen and architects resource to create and develop their creativity.

The absence of a structure of formation in the country justifies the urgency and the importance to initially insert a training program with intensive courses and training courses of short duration of improvement, preparatory courses with the entrance examinations in the large schools of art and Universities of the area or abroad.

The KARThala wants to form a great number of artists willing to contribute to the project of insertion of artistic teaching in the Comorian public schools of general education, and to nourish the debate on the African contemporary art and to take part in the development of the Comorian visual culture.

The KARThala estimates that the meeting between artists and craftsmen is an essential step for the development of the visual artistic identity of the Comoros. An important strategy for the enrichment of the aesthetic quality of the craft industry and the Comorian design.

PRODUCTION AND PROMOTION

Conscious of the lack of infrastructures in the Comoros and in the area for the distribution of and the promotion of visual arts, the Karthala has a large showroom where the artists can present their work with complete freedom. The KARThala also puts to the provision of the artists its large courtyard, an ideal framework to try out new forms of artistic expressions by the realization of oeuvres on the site, performances…

The KARThala wishes to promote the emerging artists in the national, regional and international artistic scene.

The KARThala centrecounts to organize specific, transitory and itinerary artistic events (markets and fairs of visual arts, biennial, intervention in public spaces...) in cultural spaces of the Archipelago of the Comoros and in the other countries of the Indian Ocean and in Africa.

The KARThala plans to regularly invite trainers (artist-teachers, designers, art historians and foreign art critics) resulting from its network, to take part in the formation of young people, to give speeches or to put together exhibitions of regional or international character.
